September is National Baby Safety Month
Every parent wants their little one to grow, explore, and thrive safely. September is National Baby Safety Month, a timely opportunity to shine a light on practical, everyday steps that safeguard our youngest loved ones. At Encompass Family Support Services, we share that commitment wholeheartedly. Rooted in our mission to empower and promote the well-being of families through support, education, advocacy, and community inclusion, we are dedicated to helping you build a nurturing, confident environment for your baby.
Baby Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know
Safe Sleep for Infants
Safe sleep is essential for reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Always place your baby on their back to sleep, in a crib or bassinet that is free of pillows, blankets, bumpers, and toys. Make sure the mattress is firm and fits snugly in the crib. Avoid overheating by dressing your baby in light sleep clothing and keeping the room at a comfortable temperature. Consider using a wearable blanket or sleep sack instead of loose blankets.
Car Seat Safety
Car seats are critical for keeping babies safe during travel, and safety begins with the right fit, correct installation, and trusted support. Choose a seat that matches your child’s age, weight, and height, keeping infants rear-facing as long as possible, ideally until age two or until they reach the seat’s maximum limits, and move to forward-facing or booster seats when appropriate, following manufacturer recommendations. Always follow installation instructions carefully, ensure the seat is securely anchored using LATCH or seat belt, and regularly check that straps and harnesses fit snugly. In North Dakota, children under age 8 must use a car seat or booster, and those ages 8 through 17 must be properly secured in a restraint system. Improper use can result in penalties.
Local Car Seat Resources:
For expert guidance, families in Barnes County can turn to the City County Health District, which offers car seat installation by appointment, checkup events, and free seats for qualifying families.
Sanford Children’s Car Seat Safety Center in Fargo-Moorhead is the region’s only permanent full-service inspection station offering year-round car seat safety checks, safety product demonstrations, and educational materials. Services are available by appointment.
Safe Kids Grand Forks, led by Altru Health System, hosts free monthly car seat checkup events in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and partners with community agencies in Grafton and Crookston, offering appointments and outreach. Certified technicians ensure proper fitting, can help inspect for recalls, and provide hands-on guidance.
Babyproofing Your Home
As babies grow, they become curious and mobile, making babyproofing a must: anchor heavy furniture and TVs to prevent tipping. Install safety gates at stairways and keep cords, small objects, and choking hazards out of reach. Cover electrical outlets and secure cabinets with dangerous items. Keep cleaning supplies, medications, and sharp objects stored in a secure location. A safe environment allows babies to explore without unnecessary risks.
Feeding Safety and Bonding
Feeding time is not only about nourishment; it is also a special opportunity for bonding. Always stay close and supervise your baby during feedings while watching carefully for any signs of choking. When it is time to introduce solid foods, follow age-appropriate guidelines and cut foods into small, manageable pieces. Keep bottles and nipples clean, and check them regularly for signs of wear. For breastfed babies, make sure there is a proper latch to reduce the risk of discomfort or aspiration. If you would like to learn more, take a look at The Power of Nutrition in Child Development.
Additional Baby Safety Tips
Bathing: Never leave a baby unattended in the bath. Keep water temperature warm, not hot, and use slip-resistant mats.
Health: Keep up with vaccinations and regular pediatric checkups. Wash your hands before handling your baby, especially for newborns.
Emergency Preparedness: Learn infant CPR and have emergency contacts easily accessible.
